Fair Wear and Tear on your Leased Vehicle

13/03/2018

Fair Wear and Tear on your Leased Vehicle

We all know a brand new vehicle won’t stay brand new for too long! We expect there to be acceptable wear and tear on your lease car, but if there are big dents or severe scratches on the body work, or if the interior is really damaged in some way,  you may be charged.

There is a degree of fairness in this and you won’t be charged for general wear, so if you look after the vehicle, there usually won’t be a cost.

As a general rule you should:

  • Return the vehicle in a safe and roadworthy condition, with all the appropriate documentation, spare keys and equipment
  • Ensure the vehicle has been serviced according to the manufacturer's service schedule. Books should be stamped at the time of service to keep the history of the car
  • Clean the vehicle to allow a thorough inspection

Minor scuffs and scrapes that are up to around 25mm long are considered fair wear and tear and upholstery is expected to be clean and tidy with just slight wear.

Deep, long scrapes and scuffs and any burns or soiling to upholstery will be considered unacceptable.

The BVRLA states, “Fair wear and tear occurs when normal usage causes deterioration to a vehicle. It is not to be confused with damage which occurs as a result of a specific event or series of events such as impact, inappropriate stowing of items, harsh-treatment, negligent acts or omissions.”

More information can be found via the OVL Group Ltd Fair Wear and Tear Guide.

If you are concerned about the wear and tear on your car we recommend you speak to your account manager here at OVL.
