Volkswagen (abbreviated VW) is a German automobile manufacturer and is the original and biggest-selling marque of the Volkswagen Group, which now also owns the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT and Škoda marques.. They also own the truck manufacturer Scania and 49% of Porsche. Volkswagen means "people's car" in German. Its current tagline or slogan is Das Auto (The Car). Volkswagen's relationship with the UK dates back to 1952, when the first two Beetles were sold. In 1953 Volkswagen Motors Ltd became the official UK importer and in 1978 its operations were centralised when they moved into new headquarters in Blakelands, Milton Keynes. Today Volkswagen UK, as part of the Volkswagen Group, is one of the country's largest importers of vehicles, employing nearly 600 people nationwide, with the Volkswagen brand employing 180 in Blakelands alone. Famous originally for the VW Beetle (Bug in the USA), the company still produces the model in various formats and has recently updated the range.
