The electric car market is growing quickly, with almost 265,000 models on UK roads at the end of December 2019. The most recent set of figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that plug-in models made up 6.3% of total UK new car registrations, with pure-electric models accounting for 3.3% of that figure.
In the first two months of 2020 the orders we have received here at OVL Ltd reflect these figures. In January, 39% of all of our orders were for Alternative Fuel Vehicles, this rose to 46% in February and we fully expect to see this number rise again as we progress throughout the year.
Tesla remains a firm favourite with our customers but models including the Jaguar I-Pace (full electric), Ford Kuga PHEV (plug in hybrid) and Toyota Corolla (self charge hybrid) are currently popular among our customers.
2020 looks set to be a breakthrough year for Alternative Fuel Vehicles with many new models due for launch. At the end of 2019 figures showed there were 125 plug-in cars and vans available ranging from superminis, large family cars, hatchbacks, estates, SUVs, executive models, and medium-sized vans.
Choice is opening up for customers, range is getting bigger for pure electric cars and more charging points are being installed up and down the country. Zap-map updates it’s figures monthly and it currently shows that the total number of locations which have a public charging point installed is 11,044, the number of devices at those locations is 17,816 and the total number of connectors within these devices is 30,957. Over 400 new devices were added to the Zap-map location search in February 2020 alone.
